Module 1 - Plan for safety and security of self and others afloat.
  Element 1a : Demonstrate safety knowledge
   

i) Demonstrate an understanding of current requirements for power cruising in the Guiding Manual
ii) Identify suitable clothing and personal safety equipment for yourself and others
iii) Assess and monitor the personal fitness and medical condition of yourself and others
iv) Show how to check that the boat and its equipment are safe to use
v) Show how to use the utility equipment afloat
vi) Discuss the importance of crew discipline
vii) Assess and manage the risks of a power-cruising activity
viii)Demonstrate evidence of current first-aid knowledge

  Element 1b : Demonstrate knowledge of your effect on the environment and on others
    i) Explain how to use water safely, referring to local regulations
ii) Explain how to behave courteously and responsibly when afloat
iii) Discuss issues of access and river bank ownership
iv) Discuss the roles of the relevant agencies
  Element 1c : Demonstrate knowledge of external factors on safety
    i) Discuss the adverse effects of pollution, rubbish, vegetation, speeding etc.
ii) Explain how to deal with these hazards
iii) Explain how to obtain appropriate weather forecasts and how weather conditions may affect the activity
  Element 1d : Plan a journey
    i) Demonstrate an understanding of the current requirements for relevant activities in The Guiding Manual
ii) Plan a journey taking account of services and features on the way
iii) Explain anything else that needs to be considered
iv) Explain the action to take in the event of a mechanical breakdown or similar unforeseen event

 

Module 2 - Demonstrate craft knowledge and boat-handling skills on a canal

  Element 2a : Demonstrate craft knowledge
   

i) Show how to use the utility equipment afloat
ii) Demonstrate the checks to carry out before starting the engine.
iii)Demonstrate correct operation of the engine while running
iv) Demonstrate turning the engine off correctly and any subsequent related procedures
v) Show how to clear the propeller of weeds or other debris

  Element 2b : Show how to manoeuvre the boat, assisted by crew
    i) Untie the boat and move away from the mooring
ii) Bring the craft alongside the bank or jetty
iii) Moor and tie up the boat
iv) Demonstrate the effects of wind, bank, passing craft and how to deal with these
v) Show how to negotiate bridges and other canal features
vi) Demonstrate how to turn the boat
  Element 2c : Demonstrate and describe emergency procedures
    i) Throw an unweighted line to reach a person 8 metres away and a person 2 metres above you
ii) Demonstrate man overboard procedures
iii) Demonstrate the correct use of the long pole and other techniques to free the boat when it has run aground
iv) Demonstrate an emergency stop
v) Demonstrate a fire drill and evacuate the boat
vi) Describe the emergency action for problems using locks
